Welcome to the Christa McAuliffe Elementary School Counseling Web Page! My name is Debra Gaeta and this is my fourteenth year as the Professional School Counselor at CMES! I grew up in New York and attended the University of Virginia, where I earned a B.A. in Psychology. I then attended the University of Maryland at College Park, where I earned an M.Ed. in School Counseling. I love our students and working at McAuliffe Elementary School!

School Counseling Mission Statement!

It is the mission of the School Counseling Program of Christa McAuliffe Elementary School to work with the families of students, other educators, and community members to help students reach their highest potential in the areas of Academic, Career, and Personal/Social development. The counselor will advocate for and work with all students, support all students equally, and provide all students with the skills and knowledge to become effective lifelong learners with exemplary character and productive members of their communities.

 


Philosophy and Beliefs for the School Counseling Program of Christa McAuliffe Elementary School

The professional school counselor serving Christa McAuliffe Elementary School believes:
·        All students can succeed.
·        School counseling is an essential and integral part of the overall education process.
·        All students will have access to a comprehensive, developmental school counseling program run by a masters level, state certified professional school counselor.
·        The dignity and culture of all students and their families, including race, ethnicity, gender, abilities, disabilities, sexual orientation, religion, home language, and socio-economic status, should be respected and valued.
·        All students’ cultural differences, special needs, and developmental needs should be considered in planning and implementing lessons and activities for the school counseling program.
 
And the Christa McAuliffe Elementary School comprehensive school counseling program should:
·        Be concerned with all students.
·        Use the Prince William County K-12 School Counseling Curriculum to meet academic, career, and personal/social objectives for every student.
·        Collaborate with McAuliffe Elementary School staff, families, stakeholders, and the community to meet student needs and deliver programs.
·        Be proactive as well as responsive.
·        Focus on primary prevention.
 
And the professional school counselor at Christa McAuliffe Elementary School will:
·        Be accountable by using data to drive program development.
·        Use staff, parent and student surveys, pre-test and post tests and school-wide data to plan, manage, evaluate and improve the effectiveness of the lessons, groups and program activities.
·        Plan activities to be delivered through collaborative efforts of the school counselor as well as community volunteers and school support staff.
·        Advocate for every student.
·        Help every member of the school community feel included, appreciated, and valued.
·        Abide by school counseling ethics as advocated by the American School Counselor Association.
·        Participate in professional development activities to maintain a quality school counseling program.

What can a school counselor do for me?

School counselors can:
* Meet with parents to discuss concerns about their child, particularly related to social, behavioral, amd emotional issues.
* Sit in on parent-teacher conferences upon the request of the teacher, parent, or administrator.
* Provide parents with resources in the community to meet long-term counseling needs.
* Refer parents to resources to meet financial and medical needs.
*Work with parents and teachers to develop a behavioral plan for a child who is experiencing behavior difficulties in school.
* Lend out videos and books to families on a variety of topics.

What can a school counselor do for my child?
School Counselors can:

*Help children express and deal with feelings of grief regarding the death of a family member, friend, or pet.
* Provide a safe environment for children to talk about a separation or divorce in their family.
* Meet with a child who was referred to the counselor by themselves, their parents, their teacher, or an administrator.
* Help children resolve conflicts with peers.
* Include children in small groups on different topics such as study skills, test-taking skills, organizational skills, changing families, friendship, listening skills, and respect.
* Teach guidance lessons in the classrooms on a variety of topics
